Open floor plans are the desire of many an owner of houses older than the 1950s. Some owners like the separated, cellularized nature of older houses, while other owners like the "openness" and traffic flow afforded by open floor plan houses.

Do you think you could be anymore vague? For someone like me who knows nothing about the homes of the 50’s or even comparison to traffic flow (don’t all homes allow for traffic flow?) I see this ridiculous term and now it’s ridiculous definition and think it is nothing more than a catch phrase for “you’ll like this home”. I think i’ll keep searching for what the phrase means.

Granted, the blog post isn’t much, but it does link to an article of greater length.

Homes with open floor plans are not specific to just older homes. Many of the newer homes, especially here in the South Charlotte area, are mostly very large, new homes with open floor plans.

In these homes you may be able to see up to 5 rooms from standing at one point – usually by standing in front of the fireplace. You can see two story foyers, hallways, the living room and kitchen all at the same time.

My speciality is to design color schemes for these particular homes which can be challenging for them (the homeowners) since it’s difficult to know exactly ‘where to start and stop the color”.
