Granite; Counters

Yes, asking "How much do granite counters cost" is a bit like asking "How long should a man's legs be?" * And yes, estimating costs of anything related to home remodeling is difficult, because so many factors are involved.

But here at About Home Renovations, we are known for our sheer boldness, so we make a courageous stab at the question of how much granite kitchen counters cost.

Seriously, though, the cost of granite is incredibly scalable. You can install low-end DIY tile granite from Home Depot or Lowe's...or you can have the ritzy professionals fabricate and install slab granite: your choice.

Three things do have a significant bearing on the cost of granite counters:  Why form of granite are we talking about anyway?  You can install granite in at least three--even four--ways:

  1. Natural Slab Granite - Your most expensive option.  Big chunks quarried straight from the Earth.
  2. Engineered Granite - "Formed" granite made of stone particles and binding agents.
  3. Tile Granite - These 12" x 12" (or other sizes) of granite tile you often see at home improvement stores, and which you can install yourself.
  4. Modular Granite - A happy medium between tile and slab.

Counter tops range in price depending on what type of material you go with. There are prefab products on the cheep side and natural stone or quarts materials on the high. If you have kids or want a low maintenance countertop then go with a quarts product. We bought ours through Direct Buy Los Angeles DOT com and got below contractor pricing which came to about $900 in savings. Now the other side of the cost is in the labor. We did not go with the cheapest because we saw what happened to a friend that did and they had to redo parts of the instillation. Make sure your installer is licensed, bonded and insured. Check out their license on your local government website.

Granite countertops cost depend on the style, design and thickness. And I agree that the cost is pretty scalable. Some use granite tiles because it’s more affordable than those natural slab and engineered ones.

How long should a man’s legs be? Not one foot, nor ten feet long. The problem with rhetorical questions like that is that there is usually a better answer than the one you are prepared to give.

Let me help you by providing some boundaries.

Does a granite countertop cost a penny or $100,000?

ok, GO
