How to Fix Crooked Studs When Drywalling

You're putting up nice new...flat...drywall. And the studs where you are placing the drywall is something less than flat.

Hopefully you won't have much of a problem with this if it's a drywall-for-drywall substitution. After all, whoever put up that first layer of drywall had to account for bows and bends in the studs one way or another. But things happen. Studs lose their straightness. Or, it could be that you've demo'd your plaster and want to put up drywall. Plaster can be installed on less than perfect studs.

Of these three methods of straightening out studs for drywall, the first two can be used on load-bearing or non load-bearing walls. The third method should be used only on non load-bearing walls because it involves cutting into the stud.
