Squishy and Hollow Tub Floor - What to Do?

A reader asked about a "squishy and hollow" tub floor that he had. The hollow part isn't so concerning. Fiberglass and acrylic tubs feel and sound that way. But even newer ones don't feel that way so much anymore. The "squishy" part is a bit more concerning and there is one possible reason for this.
