Chicken or Egg: Planning the Order of Your Home Remodeling Projects

Wednesday November 26, 2008
The Home Renovations Forum had a great question about the order of remodeling tasks. The question was:

I am planning a remodel of my bathroom and need some help in deciding what to do when. I am doing a bit of tile work to repair tiles removed by my plumber doing some pipe work in the shower. I am also going to texture and repaint the walls. FInally, my tub needs reglazing. At this point, I'm not planning to mess with the floor. My original thought was to do all the tile and paint work and then have the tub reglazers work - but now I'm wondering if that should be first.
Renovation plans are very malleable. There is the camp of people who believe that flooring should go down before paint; then there are those who believe it should be paint before flooring. Tub glazers (or refinishers) have a mandate to protect the surrounding work (actually anyone who works on your house should, but most tub refinishers are pretty good at this).
