Why Can't Home Remodeling Be Easier?
That's the point--and a very good one, too--that the L.A. Times' Kathy Price-Robinson obliquely makes. Why can't we just send the house around to the various places that specialize in demolition (Bangladesh), wood (Canada), tile (Mexico), and more...you get the point. New home builders for years have been trying to wake the sleeping giant of assembly-line built houses. Pulte, a huge East Coast new home builder, has an amazing factory in Chantilly, Virginia that does everything but furnish the interior. This is not your typical modular home factory; this is the real thing. Trouble is, there aren't many full-fledged Pulte-style house factories out there.
And worse of all, it can never be translated to home remodeling, which by definition happens in situ. Is home remodeling destined to be stuck in the Dark Ages. There must be a way to streamline this process. Does anyone have ideas? Send me an email if you can think of something brilliant.
