Small Kitchen

For some homeowners, the small kitchen is a reality that is foisted on them. For others, the small kitchen is a relief from the problems associated with huge kitchens. Problems, you say? Well, with over-size kitchens you can quadruple the materials costs for practically everything. With high materials costs, you find yourself cutting back or looking for more economical materials.

Not so with the small kitchen. In the typical small kitchen, you can practically use solid gold countertops and still come out under the estimates for Corian in big kitchens (joke, joke...). But really - think about it. You can afford to go higher end in the small kitchen, all while maintaining the same functionality.

  1. Think: built-in microwaves or shelves to elevate your microwave. Microwaves are the number one "space waster" for countertops.
  2. Window or cabinetry? If you have to make a choice, most experts recommend saving the window. It is a personal choice, but studies show that the added light and feeling of openness is a high priority in small kitchens.
  3. The galley kitchen or corridor kitchen (same thing, different name) is the classic way of dealing with small kitchen spaces.
  4. Push cabinetry all the way to the ceiling.
  5. It's not always necessary to buy full-size appliances. Trimmed-down fridges and dishwashers can free up valuable space that you can use for more counters or cabinets.
