Vinyl Ceiling Tiles Anyone?

Readers sometimes approach me about where they can find plaster or tin elements for the ceiling.  My response is to direct them first to an architectural salvage yard, and if that fails, I recommend that they purchase vinyl ceiling tiles from a supplier like Ceilume.

In a few cases, readers have said, "But vinyl ceiling tiles aren't authentic!"

True, they may not be consistent with what you previously had.  And they may not be authentic to the time period of your home.  But it's important to remember some things:

  1. Elements that are out of reach and cannot be touched can pass examination better than things that you can touch.  So, it's vital that flooring be the real thing, or at least look, sound, and feel like the real thing.  But ceiling elements just need to look right.
  2. Sometimes, you just use what you can find.
