Special Sash Window Locks?

By , About.com Guide   March 5, 2010

Follow me on:

Q: I am getting desperate...  [I] have sash windows. They open inwards and are more than 2 meters high and about a meter wide. They have a window sill that is quite a bit lower than the window itself, about 6 cm, so it is not possible to use standard stays or adjusters.

[As we have small children] we want to find a way of locking the windows with a small to medium opening. The left-hand window can be locked into place with only the right-hand one open, so I am looking for some sort of a lock/hook/stay that I can screw onto the left window and can then have a hook in the right window allowing it to hook open for a small amount.

Have you ever seen window hooks like this?

A: I can understand the gravity of your situation. Thank goodness my son is now older, and I worry a bit less about this.

Even though there are plenty of window safety devices out there, I do not know of any products like you describe that are made specifically for that type of window configuration you describe.

Without being able to see the windows, my recommendation is that you create an ad hoc solution to this. If either you or your partner are handy, you can comb the aisles of your local hardware store in the locks/knobs/latches section. If not, I recommend hiring a handyman. No doubt he can come up with some creative solutions (it's worth the cost).

I would get a hook and eye lock and put at top of windows one on each then they cannot reach the top of the window. I hope I have helped you out and good luck.

Those are called window stops. I have never understood why they are not made of a more sturdy material than plastic. Home Depot or Lowe’s may have generic replacement window stops. Mine are external, meaning that they screw onto the window frame (rather being sunk into the frame). This makes them easier to replace. See which kind yours are…

I am sure there must be a common fixing that can be attached to the frame and the window to allow no further movement outwards of the window. You should speak to a window supplier and they will be able to help you.

If not visit a DIY store where you should be able to find something.
