Yes, it's a terrible sight to see my About.com e-mail In-Box whenever I take the bold and reckless step of publishing some kind of
list of home remodeling estimates. I get comments like:
- "Are you kidding? Window replacment in Austin is way more than that!!"
- "You fool. How can you expect a contractor in Miami, Florida to complete an addition for that cost?"
- "Obviously you know nothing about the market for qualified electricians in Peoria!"
And the truth is - They're right. They have a finely detailed, granular view of how much it costs to hang a slab door in Fresno, CA in May. But someone has to take a whack at these broad figures, and I guess it's me.
I couldn't resist this one. I created a list of the
5 absolute worst home remodeling projects from a "cost return" perspective. We've got such smack-you-in-the-head-dumb things like building a sunroom. But others that need to be done, but unfortunately don't pay back like they should: roof replacement, for one.
Here's the nice part. This list of dumb investments itself comes from none other than crumbing mortgage giant Freddie Mac.
Still... Not a bad list, huh?
