The main focus of the United States government agency, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is our environment and its impact on our health. Founded in 1970, the EPA is best known for creating and enforcing standards related to manufacturing and toxic waste removal and cleanup. However, the EPA has long been a supporter of green building initiatives, and the agency has founded several programs that impact homeowners who want to go green.
Most notably, the EPA created the "preferential purchasing programs" Energy Star, which governs appliances and other building materials, and WaterSense, which promotes water conservation practices. Energy Star also encompasses an entire home certification system for new homes and extensive renovations, as well as Home Performance with Energy Star certificates through partnering state programs. Tax credits may be available for homeowners who comply with these programs.
