Definition: The pedestal sink has a column-like base (the pedestal) with a basin mounted on top. Separating the pedestal sink into two pieces makes it easier to move and install. Also, it is easier to fabricate.
But there are a few interesting things about the pedestal sink that you may or may not know:
- No water supply pipes come up through the entire length of the pedestal section (i.e., up through the floor). By the same token, the waste water does not flow out through the bottom of the pedestal. Each of these flow through the adjoining wall.
- The basin is usually attached to the wall with a metal cleat, meaning that much of the weight is borne by the wall.
Also Known As: stand-alone sink
Common Misspellings: pedestel sink, peddastal sink, pedasstal sink
Examples:
To give the bathroom more space and avoid the "boxy" feeling of a modular sink base, the designer decided to install a pedestal sink.
