Find Out Why You Want to Avoid Using Drywall Sponge for Corners

By , About.com Guide

When you’re sanding down the drywall compound (i.e., “mud”) on your corners, it’s tempting to use some of the more user-friendly tools. A drywall sanding sponge is extremely user-friendly. It’s soft, easy to grip, and it can be immersed in water to cut down your dust to almost nothing.

But Don’t Use the Drywall Sponger on Outside Corners...

Because of the drywall sponge’s pliability, it will not form the kind of flat and true ninety-degree angle that you are looking for. Only by using the more traditional drywall sander—the solid sander that requires insertion of sandpaper—can you achieve a razor-sharp corner.

If the sponge is all you have, by all means use it. It’s not the end of the world if the corner is a bit rounded. But if it’s a choice between one or the other, leave the drywall sponge back in your shop.

What About Inside Drywall Corners?

That's a different matter. You can quite effectively use a special right-angle drywall sponge for the inside corners.
