Drywall Sanding - Don't Overdo It

Public Domain
Installing drywall isn't quite as simple as putting together jigsaw pieces. Yet it's worth taking on this task, because good drywallers are in short supply. And when you do get a good drywall installer to come into your house, be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for this non-rocket-science task.

Problem: Over-Sanding

In their zeal to achieve a smooth surface, many DIY drywallers over-sand the mud compound. But when you sand too far, you risk the chance of actually sanding below the surface of the surrounding drywall. And then you begin to abrade and destroy the Sheetrock's delicate paper cover.

Fix: Check sanding progress by installing a light at a low angle to the wall. This will highlight any rises or bumps.
