Wide Plank Flooring

The Traditional Way of Filling in the Gaps

By , About.com Guide

In the past, those deep gaps between wide wood planks were filled in with rope.

If you have wood plank flooring and want to do this, follow these steps:

  • Clean out the cracks with a putty knife and follow with the Shop-Vac.
  • Test several short lengths of rope in the cracks until you find one that fits tightly. Then buy the appropriate length of rope by measuring floor length multiplied by the number of boards.
  • Stain your test lengths of rope the color of the floor by immersing in a bucket of stain. Again, you may need to test several different hues until you get the right one. Let dry. Keep in mind that the color will change after the stain is dry.
  • When you have the color you like, then stain the rest of the rope in the bucket.
  • Press the dried rope into the cracks until you have filled all of the gaps.
