Base Molding, Baseboard Molding

Definition: Most baseboards come with a finished edge at the top. But often, when you are dealing with thicker, wider types of baseboards, you need to finish off the top of the baseboard.

To do this, you apply what is called base molding. Base molding is a thin strip of molding that tacks onto the top of the baseboard to provide a better visual transition from baseboard to wall.

Quarter round is often used as base molding for baseboards.

Examples:
After the finish carpenters installed the 5" baseboards, they finishing them off by apply base molding to the top.
