Definition: Joists are structural beams placed parallel to each other which support the floor above. Depending on the load the joists are bearing, spacing can vary from between 12- to 24-inches on-center.

Floor joist spans (the distance that a joist can bridge, unsupported from below) are determined by a number of factors: size of the joists (2x8, 2x10, etc.); live load or dead load being supported; type of wood species; and spacing of joists.
