Question: I want granite countertop tiles that are bigger than 12" x 12". Do they exist?
Anybody who has contemplated installing granite kitchen counters finds himself or herself in a quandry: slab granite is just too heavy and expensive, yet 12"x12" granite tiles found from The Home Depot or other local home improvement stores look...well, pretty cheap. Is there a middle ground?
Answer: Modular granite is one solution, Pedra being one of the most prominent names in this category.

But modular granite does cost more because you are buying modularized kits that include backsplashes, corner units, end pieces, and other necessary components of kitchen counters.

These things are great, but is it possible to go even cheaper?

18"x26" Granite Countertop Tiles

Yes. You can buy granite countertop tiles in 18" x 26" dimensions. The twenty-six inch depth covers the average depth of most kitchen counters. These granite tiles come pre-polished, and are ready to install.

You just need to accept the fact that you will have a seam in the counter every foot and a half. Also, you will need to keep the countertop layout fairly simple, to avoid undue fabrication.

With these kitchen counter granite tiles of that size, you will typically find:

  • Front edges that are pre-polished.
  • Basic granite colors and styles: black, taupe, brown, travertine, black/white, etc.
  • Prices per sheet (in 2009) range from $35 to $65.
  • Designed for DIY installation.
  • 1/2" thick.
  • Eased edges (slightly rounded off).
