Solid Surface Kitchen Countertop Basics
I've always thought the term solid surface countertop to be misleading. Isn't granite solid? Isn't wood? Isn't concrete? Whatever the case, solid-surface applies to any kind of largely acrylic polymer-based countertop material. Corian® is the most prominent example of solid surface kitchen countertop material.Solid surface looks super and is getting better all the time--but it will never be confused for granite or quartz. Just a rap on the surface with your knuckles will make this clear.
Iterations of Solid Surface Countertops
All solid-surface kitchen countertop materials come in large slabs that are shaped by experienced fabricators.Pros
- Cheaper than granite or quartz.
- Appearance of solid-surface approaches that of granite/quartz.
- Minor scratches can be sanded or buffed out with fine sandpaper.
Cons
- Prone to scorching and scratching.
- While cheaper than organic materials, solid surface should never be thought of as a bargain alternative.
