Extra Home Remodeling Improvements While Interior Walls Are Open

By Lee Wallender, About.com

Interior walls are open for remodeling. What else can you do besides the projects you have planned?

Extra Interior Wall Improvements

  • Add fiberglass insulation--real, batted insulation, not the blown-in stuff that is squirted into closed walls.
  • Update old electrical wiring. At the very least, inspect existing wiring and connections.
  • Examine studs. Replace or sister damaged studs.
  • Look for evidence of termite damage.
  • Replace or update plumbing.
  • Squirt expanding foam insulation around drafty windows (use the low-expansion type).
  • Add wiring for exterior (yes, exterior) lights or for an exterior electrical receptacle.
  • While not strictly an improvement, take digital photos of open walls so you'll always have the electrical and plumbing configurations on record, should you need them. Include an extended tape measure in the photo.
With the floor open, what else can you do?
