Granite Counters - Why?

Public Domain: State of Michigan
Granite counters were so big at the high point of home renovation in the 2000s--everyone had to have granite, even though they weren't completely certain why. Now that we are on the cusp of a new decade, can we strip them all away and put in something affordable and practical?

Granite counters are expensive. You would think that, with all that expense, granite would be the perfect countertop. Doesn't money buy perfection? Hardly. The downsides are too many to mention in this small space. They need to be sealed. They crack and scorch. They are practically impossible to install by yourself. I predict that in a few years, granite will look as hilariously outdated as "brick" cellphones are to us today.
