How did this come about? I think there was some idea, back in those misty days of the 1990s--when Tuscan this-and-that was all the rage, and everyone wanted their own wine cellar--that an "entertainment kitchen" was the way to go.

Entertainment kitchen? Blame the Realtors for that one.

That's my theory, at least. Realtors have to camp out in the kitchen during open houses, and potential buyers congregate there. Huge kitchens look great on real estate circulars. And every sitcom set in a residence seems to have an arena-sized kitchen.

Ah, but the small kitchen is a thing of exquisite beauty. A well-crafted small kitchen can actually help you cook faster and better. Think of all of the steps you save (yes, I'm totally serious). Think of voluminous cabinetry that you aren't installing. Think of the functionality of it all. If the house is a machine for living, as Le Corbusier said, then the kitchen is a machine for cooking.

The small kitchen isn't (just) for cheapskates and people who live in manufactured homes. It's a great bit of design for your house that makes great sense--and saves floor space for other rooms in your house.
