It's 2:00 am and you're painting the trim around your windows--and it simply has got to be done by 7:00 am (we cannot imagine why, but it sure makes for a neat set-up for this painting trick!).

There is a method of masking windows for trim-painting that involves nothing more than water and newspaper. It also happens to be one of the oldest painting tips in the book.

While you would not want to use this for more than a couple of windows, it certainly does work.

  1. Start by wetting a sheet of newspaper. I like to use the smaller-format advertising circulars because they are easier to handle and come in a heavier stock. You can either wet in the bathtub, as shown, or in a sink. Try to go easy on the water. Yes, easier said than done--but just a "dab will do you."
  2. Apply newspaper to the window. This is tough, since the paper will want to tear. But be patient, and it will work. You can make the paper easier to handle by cutting the it in 4" strips.
It will hold up for about one good stroke of the brush, after which you should apply another layer of paper. Or just wait until the hardware store opens the next day!
