When I bought my current home, an unexpected bonus fell into my lap: one month of overlap between this new house and the condo I was renting at the time.
If you haven't ever remodeled a home, you have no idea how such an offer can cause one's loins to tingle with waves of pleasure. Cut floorboards and not worry about dust! Sand down the drywall and let 'er rip! Living in a home remodel project is a miserable experience, and the thought of leaving the mess behind at the end of the day is positively enthralling.
Circumstances prevented me from making any substantial remodels during that month. And I'm glad.

I find that remodels undertaken from the get-go almost always are misguided.
It really helps to get to know the personality of the house and the neighborhood. Where does the sun hit in Summer? How about in Fall?
And there are very pressing issues: Will the basement flood?
Besides, waiting a year after purchasing the house lets you get past the depletion of funds from the down payment. And it very much appeals to procrastinators, too.
