Remodeling Former Rentals May Set Back Your Timetable

Former rental homes will have you fielding basic repairs so a long time before you can begin the "cool" renovations.

And oh boy...do I know from experience.

When you take possession of a home that was formerly a rental property, expect conditions of the property to range from average to horrific. Rarely will you ever buy a former rental home that is in tip-top shape. After all, why should the landlord exert more effort than is needed?

Thus, you'll find yourself in the first few months or years fielding basic repair and remodel tasks that should have been done long ago.

With my current home, the sellers had rented out the house--but they professed to be masters of home repair. Wrong. Even to this day, I still find shortcuts that these geniuses implemented in the house, even when a better option would have cost just a few cents more.
