Most of us purchase our electricity from a local power company, which is generated by burning fossil fuels. However, there are several ways to create your own power at home by installing renewable energy systems. The most common types are brought to you via the sun, wind, water and the heat of the earth or the process of burning organic materials.
1. Solar Power
Unless you live in a particularly cloudy climate, then your home likely receives plenty of sunshine throughout the year. 2. Wind Power
When you think of windmills, a pastoral Dutch landscape might come to mind. Modern windmills are sleek and modern, and they are very efficient at turning wind into usable energy. Wind turbines aren't for everyone; in some locations the wind does not blow enough, and building codes may prove restrictive for this towering structures.
3. Geothermal Power
The earth's heat can be used to warm water and create steam that powers turbines and generates electricity. Geothermal power is plentiful and reliable, but be prepared to spend a lot upfront to drill the wells.
4. Hydropower
Generating electricity from moving water is one of the cleanest and most affordable renewable energy systems. Unfortunately, it's only a viable option if you live by a river with a steady enough flow.
5. Biomass
Organic materials from plants or animals can be burned to create energy that can be converted to electricity. Obviously, the process of burning anything is bad for the environment, but organic materials burn much cleaner than fossil fuels. A biomass stove, such as a pellet stove, can heat your entire home.
