Drop Ceiling

By , About.com Guide

Definition: A drop ceiling, also known as a suspended ceiling, is composed of square or rectangular tiles hanging several inches below your existing ceiling or joists.

How is a Drop Ceiling Installed?

First, a framework of lightweight aluminum is installed in a grid-like matrix. This grid is composed of pieces called main beams and cross tees, and is hung from above by hanger wires. After the grid is installed, ceiling panels made of mineral fiber or metal are tilted up into place and are allowed to rest within individual "pockets."

Why Install a Drop Ceiling?

Because drop ceilings entirely circumvent existing ceilings, they can be used to cover up problem ceilings without the mess of demolition.

Also, because of the trapped air space above the drop ceiling, drop ceilings tend to slow the transmission of sound. As a result, these suspended ceilings are ideal for home movie theaters, offices, or play rooms for children.

Also Known As: suspended ceiling, dropped ceiling
Examples:
Because the kids were getting older and noisier, Jim and Kate decided to install a drop ceiling in the basement and turn it into a kids' play room.
