With the previous steps, you now know the general location of the stud. Now find the exact location with the stud finder.

Place the stud finder about six to eight inches to the left of the general location of the stud. Press the button on the stud finder. Slowly slide the stud finder right-ward.

When the stud finder indicates that it has located the stud (usually with a red light or a beep), immediately stop moving the stud finder. Mark this spot with a pencil or scrap of masking tape. This is the left side of the stud.
