Skylight Positioning Tip

Skylights seem to be the answer to our window woes. After all, if we cannot have a window due to some obstruction or another, why not just punch a hole in the ceiling for a skylight? It seems like they could be positioned anywhere we want.

Yes and no. Barring any obstructions in the attic and roof, skylights can be positioned anywhere in the ceiling. But consider roof slope.

The closer to the center of the house that you position the skylight, the more vertical space in the attic you need to traverse with a skylight shaft. Conversely, the closer to an exterior wall that you position the skylight, the short skylight shaft you need to build.
